Eight and ten years ago one month from this very night
We were sailing a ship called the Emberly III
No land as far as the trained eye could see
Whaling abroad on the eastern Pacific tides
He stood on the starboard deck staring down into the waves
And I swear on my name that he saw something there
Apparition so horrible, or future so fair
I can not say for he took that sight to the grave
There was no moon that night and the sea glowed dull green
I looked for an answer but none could be seen
He was talking to something then he jumped in the tide
As I looked on in horror not sure how he survived
But then luck was a lady and he had no shortage of either
It was obvious something had changed him at sea
Or was it something he put in his tea?
A stand up young man, though he was a bit of a miser
Then a fever took him and he started acting quite strange
Was it an illusion or a trick of the brain?
He just sat in the corner and he never quite moved
I had some ideas but they were never quite proved
Then on night came a crash and the sound of shattering glass
Wind swept through the windows and all around
His bedchamber empty he was never quite found
I wondered why although I could never quite ask
Because there was no moon that night and the sea glowed dull green
As I looked for an answer, but there was none to be seen
I heard him shouting at something, then a break in the tide
Never again did I see him alive
