Iron and Cotton

from A Kind of Therapy by Noah Denzer

lyrics

A run down country store by Mayfall River, she was only passing by
That morning horseback, thirst enough for ten,
and a sign that caught the eye.

The sheriff he was there with his eyes held mostly down,
but it was as crooked as was cold
He asked her how she was, how the lot was holding up.
She said she knew no more than she was told

The sheriff rode back to town, this time wearing a frown,
his eyes were still held mostly down
Asked old Scotty Leehan if the Closers had been seen,
but there was nothing to be found.

30 miles away she was clearing dust and hay
from the barnyard loft soon to be their home
She got in with the wrong crowd,
but it was a little late by now to do as they do in Rome.

Meanwhile back in town the sheriff loosed his hounds,
They got the scent and headed on the trail
If he could catch the lot of them it would all be safe again,
Locked away without parole or bail

He had a group of hired men, they numbered four and ten,
And to be safe he had them go along
They had it all planned out, knew all the exit routes,
That way nothing could go wrong.

No, she wasn't always this way,
word is out that she was someone in here day
But she fell out of line, she fell out of luck
She had to sell her own home, had to sell her old truck
What would it take for me to fall in with a band of thieves?

They began to call themselves the closers,
But all the deals they made were cut in hell
As swift blow to the head of the provider,
Iron and cotton dinner bell

As a darling girl became a vicious killer
It was just a means to an end
She would surely burn in her damnation,
The sheriff’s trip that night a heaven send

A farmhouse on the Minnesota border,
Woods to the back and to the right
It was only 20 yards, maybe shorter,
Looking to avoid a fight

They came out one by one with both hands raised above their heads, and empty can of oil and a match
All eyes watched as it fell from the rafters,
Something they could never hope to catch
